Below are tips to assist you in preparing a quality application for consideration.
- Get an early start. We recommend starting your search within 6-9 months ahead of time. In doing so, this will help you find the most scholarship opportunities.
- Prepare yourself to devote time in completing applications. Many scholarship applications will require essay type responses. Set time aside to give yourself time to complete these responses. You may be asked to submit additional materials such as a resume. Have your resume completed as this will help you complete the application process in a timely manner.
- Have realistic expectations. Whether it’s hoping to get your application essays done in a week or being awarded a scholarship, remember to be realistic! Scholarships tend to attract a large number of highly qualified applicants. Meeting minimum criteria alone does not guarantee you’ll receive a scholarship. Selections are competitive, but taking the time to prepare a quality application gives you the best chance for success!
- Become organized. One of the best methods in your scholarship journey is to find scholarship opportunities first and take note of application deadlines. Bookmark applications you want to apply to. Create a calendar of when these application deadlines occur and plan some time to complete the various applications ahead of time.
- Come with a plan. Review the scholarship criteria. Make note of what is needed to complete the application. When you are ready to complete the application, you will have the necessary materials on hand for a better overall experience.

Think about how the resources that are available to you from W. P. Carey and ASU. How will they help you in reaching your academic and career goals?
- Give adequate responses to prompts asked but do not overdo it. On average, two paragraphs providing in depth responses will be adequate. It is recommended not to provide a response greater than three paragraphs unless the application specifically states otherwise.
- Use all available resources. W. P. Carey Career Services may help you with building your resume for scholarships requiring one. Use the ASU writing center to proofread your responses. Each of the resources will help improve your scholarship application.
- Be clear and concise in your responses. Make sure your paragraph stays on topic. Begin a new paragraph when your topic changes. Your scholarship application will be better received when reading your responses.
