WPC 484 Internship & Applied Academics
WPC 484 is a 1-3 credit course where students are able earn academic credit for learning that takes place during an internship.
Students receive graded credit for completing with excellence all assignments in the WPC 484 course. These assignments are required and graded. Students do not earn academic credit based on only working somewhere for a set amount of hours. Work hours serve as the source material for the assignments, as a textbook in a standard course. Credit is given for clear evidence of significant learning and reflection about the internship experience in a workplace or academic environment, whether paid or unpaid, as reflected in those completed assignments in the WPC 484 course.Important Information
Before you apply
- Students must have already obtained an internship on your own before applying for WPC 484. The course does not supply internships to students.
- Internships must start no later than four weeks after the start of class.
- Internship work hours must occur during the same semester as the course you are enrolled. This means WPC 484 must be in same term/semester your internship takes place. We do not grant credit retroactively.
- Students are prohibited from working in a business owned by a close relative.
Credit hour information
- Students receive one credit for 40 hours of internship work, two credits for 80 hours of internship work, and three credits for 120 hours of internship work. Internship work hours are hours worked where students are LEARNING in the job, not just completing regular work duties. So total hours will, in almost every case, be significantly larger than internship hours.
- WPC 484 can be a one, two, or three credit course per semester only. The maximum credit in the course in a single semester is 3 credit hours.
- The course is available to be repeated once per semester for up to 12 credits total in your academic career.
- These credits can be used as upper-division business elective credit only. These hours cannot be used as a substitute for any other required upper-division courses.
